Tattoo Aftercare
Tattoo Aftercare
At Skylla Tattoo Studio, we believe that caring for your tattoo is as essential as the artistry that goes into creating it. Proper tattoo maintenance not only helps to keep your tattoo looking vibrant but also promotes swift healing and prevents infections. Here’s everything you need to know about tattoo clean-up, what to expect during the healing process, and crucial aftercare practices.
Tattoo Clean-Up
Once your tattoo session is complete, your artist will clean the tattooed area to remove any excess ink or blood. The cleaned area is then covered with a protective bandage or film to shield it from bacteria and irritation. We advise you to keep the cover on for at least a few hours, or as directed by your tattoo artist.
What to Expect
Your new tattoo is essentially an open wound and will go through several stages of healing:
- Initial Healing (Days 1-2): You may experience redness, swelling, or slight discomfort. Oozing of clear fluid or excess ink is normal.
- Peeling Phase (Days 3-6): Your tattoo will start to itch and peel, similar to a sunburn. Do not pick at the peeling skin.
- Itching Phase (Week 2): Your tattoo may continue to itch. Resist scratching and instead apply a moisturizer to relieve the itching.
- Complete Healing (Weeks 3-4): The tattooed area will gradually recover, with the tattoo’s final look revealing itself.
Tattoo Aftercare
Effective aftercare is critical to protect your tattoo and skin health.
- Cleanliness: After 24 hours, remove the protective cover and gently wash the tattoo with mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water. Pat dry with a clean towel.
- Moisturizing: Apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific or unscented moisturizer to your tattoo a few times daily.
- Sun Protection: Once healed, always protect your tattoo from sun exposure with SPF30 or higher sunscreen.
- Avoid: Steer clear of swimming, soaking in baths, or intense workouts until your tattoo has completely healed.
- Health Check: If you notice excessive redness, pus, or a heat sensation, contact a healthcare professional immediately, as these may be signs of infection.
